Phil's States
Understanding what Phil's different visual states mean as your EdgeAI learning and focus assistant.
Introduction
Phil's character appears in the bottom-right corner during your learning sessions, changing his appearance to reflect what he's doing. These visual cues help you understand the state of your session at a glance while he monitors your focus with face tracking technology.
Phil's States
Connecting (Starting Up)
When you first start a session, Phil appears in his "connecting" state while establishing the real-time voice connection. This usually takes just a few seconds. Phil also shows this state when paused.
Idle (Listening)
Phil's default state when he's listening to you speak or waiting for you to say something. This calm, attentive appearance lets you know Phil is ready and actively listening.
Thinking (Processing)
After you finish speaking, Phil enters his "thinking" state while processing your question and preparing his response. This thoughtful appearance shows that Phil is working on crafting the best explanation or answer for you.
Speaking (Teaching)
When Phil is actively speaking and providing explanations, he shows his "speaking" state. This animated appearance makes the conversation feel more natural and engaging. Phil's character gently bounces during this state.
Encouraging (Motivating)
After Phil finishes a response, he briefly shows an encouraging expression to provide positive reinforcement. This friendly state appears for about 2 seconds, reminding you that you're making progress and Phil is here to support your learning.
State Transitions
Phil smoothly transitions between states throughout your conversation:
- Idle → You start speaking → Phil continues listening in Idle state
- Thinking → You finish speaking → Phil processes your words
- Speaking → Phil has prepared a response → He speaks to you
- Encouraging → Phil finishes speaking → Brief moment of encouragement
- Idle → Returns to listening, ready for your next question
Animations & Personality
Phil's states include subtle animations to make the experience feel more human:
- Gentle bouncing motion when speaking
- Smooth fade transitions between states
- Slight scale changes to emphasize state changes
- Warm, friendly expressions throughout
These animations help Phil feel like a real tutor who's present and engaged with your learning, not just a voice coming from your computer.
Focus Monitoring Integration
Phil's states work together with the focus monitoring system. When Phil detects that your attention has drifted, he may provide a gentle reminder through his speaking state, helping you refocus on your studies.
