Focus Monitoring

Phil uses advanced face tracking technology to help you stay focused during your learning sessions.

How Face Tracking Works

During your learning sessions, Phil uses your webcam to monitor your engagement through face tracking:

  • Face detection: Phil detects your presence and engagement level
  • Attention tracking: Monitors whether you're looking at the screen
  • Focus patterns: Identifies when your attention starts to drift
  • Privacy-first: Face tracking happens locally on your device - no video is recorded or stored

Friendly Focus Reminders

When Phil notices your attention drifting, he provides gentle, encouraging reminders:

What Phil Does

  • Gently calls your attention back to the material
  • Suggests a short break if you've been distracted multiple times
  • Offers to review what you just covered
  • Asks if you need to switch topics or take a different approach

Phil's Approach

Phil is supportive, not punitive. His reminders are:

  • Encouraging and positive
  • Non-judgmental - everyone's attention wanders
  • Helpful - offering to adjust the session if needed
  • Respectful of your learning pace

Using the Camera View

The Camera view in Stage Manager serves dual purposes:

  • Self-awareness: See yourself while studying helps maintain accountability
  • Face tracking: Enables Phil to monitor your focus in real-time
  • Mirror effect: The camera is horizontally flipped to work like a mirror
  • Easy control: Toggle the camera on/off anytime during your session

Privacy & Security

Your privacy is paramount:

  • No recording: Your video is never recorded or saved
  • Local processing: Face tracking happens entirely on your device
  • No data sharing: No facial data is sent to servers or stored
  • You're in control: Turn off the camera anytime
  • Opt-in feature: Face tracking requires webcam permission

Focus Insights

After each session, you can review your focus patterns:

  • Total focused time vs. distracted time
  • Average focus duration before distractions
  • Times of day when you're most focused
  • Topics or activities where you maintain best focus

Use these insights to optimize your study schedule and identify what helps you focus best.

Tips for Improving Focus

Maximize your focused study time:

  • Minimize distractions in your environment before starting
  • Use Pomodoro timers to build in regular breaks
  • Study in the same place to build a focus habit
  • Keep your phone out of reach during sessions
  • Let Phil know if you're struggling - he can adjust his teaching
  • Take breaks when Phil suggests them
  • Review your focus insights to identify patterns

When Focus Tracking Isn't Ideal

Face tracking works best in certain conditions:

  • Good lighting helps Phil detect your face more accurately
  • Position yourself centered in the camera frame
  • Avoid backlighting (windows behind you)
  • If you need to look away frequently (taking notes, etc.), you can disable tracking

You can always turn off the camera and continue learning without focus tracking.
