Pomodoro Timers

Use the Pomodoro Technique to maintain focus with structured work and break intervals.

Setting Up Pomodoro

Before starting a session:

  1. On the session start screen, select "Pomodoro" instead of "Session"
  2. Set your work duration (default: 50 minutes)
  3. Set your break duration (default: 10 minutes)
  4. Start your session

How Pomodoro Works

  • The timer counts down during work periods
  • Phil continues teaching during your work time
  • When work time ends, the break timer automatically starts
  • During breaks, you can pause Phil or continue light conversation
  • The cycle counter tracks completed Pomodoros
  • Work and break periods alternate automatically

Customizing Intervals

Adjust durations to match your preferences:

  • Standard: 50 min work / 10 min break
  • Traditional: 25 min work / 5 min break
  • Extended: 90 min work / 20 min break
  • Custom: Set any duration from 1-120 minutes

Session Controls

Access session controls through the Settings view in Stage Manager:

Pause Phil

Temporarily stop Phil from listening and responding:

  • Your microphone is muted
  • Phil's audio is muted
  • Phil enters his "paused" state
  • The timer continues running (unless also paused)
  • Click "Resume" to continue learning

Useful when you need to take a phone call, talk to someone nearby, or think quietly.

Pause Timer

Pause your session or Pomodoro timer:

  • The timer stops counting
  • Phil continues to work normally
  • Your study time tracking pauses
  • Resume when you're ready to continue

Good for unexpected interruptions where you want to keep learning but not count the time.

Viewing Session Progress

In the Settings view, you can see:

  • Current timer: Session timer or Pomodoro countdown with work/break indicator
  • Pomodoro info: Work duration, break duration, and completed cycles
  • Pause states: Whether Phil or the timer is paused

Note: Pomodoro settings can only be changed before starting a session, not during.

Ending Your Session

When you're ready to finish:

  1. Click the "End Session" button at the bottom of the screen
  2. Phil's responses from the session are saved as notes
  3. All study materials (flashcards, problems, mind maps) are saved
  4. Your total session time is recorded
  5. You return to the session start screen

You can view the session details and AI overview immediately from your dashboard.

Tips for Effective Sessions

  • Start with Pomodoro if you struggle with long study sessions
  • Use 50/10 intervals for deep learning topics
  • Try 25/5 intervals for memorization and practice
  • Pause Phil during breaks, but keep the timer running to track total time
  • Don't stress about pausing - it's better than getting distracted
  • Review your Pomodoro cycle count to set goals for future sessions
  • End sessions when you feel your focus declining, even if time remains
