Selections Overview
Create selections, upload resources, and view your complete learning history with session notes and AI overviews.
What are Selections?
Selections are focused learning topics that help Phil understand what you want to study. When you start a session, you choose a selection (like "Chemistry," "Calculus," or "Spanish"), and Phil tailors his teaching to that specific area.
Each selection tracks your progress, stores session history, and can include custom resources that Phil uses to teach you more effectively.
Creating a Selection
To create a new selection:
- Go to your dashboard and navigate to the Selections section
- Click "Create New Selection"
- Give it a name (e.g., "AP Chemistry," "Spanish Vocabulary," "Data Structures")
- Optionally add a description to provide more context
- Choose an emoji icon to make it easy to identify
- Save your selection
You can also use "General Learning" if you don't want to focus on a specific topic.
Uploading Resources
One of the most powerful features of selections is the ability to upload custom resources that Phil uses to teach you:
What Resources Can You Upload?
- PDFs: Textbook chapters, study guides, lecture notes
- Documents: Word docs, Google Docs exports, course materials
- Images: Diagrams, charts, problem sets, handwritten notes
- Text files: Notes, outlines, vocabulary lists
How Phil Uses Your Resources
When you upload resources to a selection:
- Phil reads and understands the content before your session
- He references specific information from your materials during teaching
- Flashcards and practice problems are based on your actual course content
- Phil can explain concepts exactly as they appear in your textbook or notes
- He adapts to your course's specific terminology and notation
Uploading Resources
To upload resources:
- Open a selection from your dashboard
- Click "Upload Resource" or drag and drop files
- Add a title and optional description for each resource
- Phil will process the resource and make it available for sessions
Organizing Your Selections
Keep your selections organized:
- By course: Create one selection per class (e.g., "Biology 101," "Calc II")
- By topic: Break larger subjects into focused selections (e.g., "Organic Chemistry," "Kinematics")
- By goal: Create selections for specific objectives (e.g., "SAT Math Prep," "Midterm Review")
- By semester: Keep current classes separate from past courses
Editing & Managing Selections
You can always update your selections:
- Rename selections as your focus changes
- Add or remove resources as you progress through material
- Update descriptions to reflect current goals
- Archive completed selections to declutter your dashboard
- Delete selections you no longer need (session history is preserved)
Using Resources in Sessions
When you start a session with a selection that has uploaded resources:
- Phil automatically has access to all your uploaded materials
- You can ask Phil to explain specific pages or sections
- Request flashcards based on your textbook chapters
- Ask for practice problems in the style of your course materials
- Phil can reference diagrams and figures from your uploads
Example: "Can you explain the diagram on page 47 of my Chemistry textbook?" or "Make flashcards for Chapter 3 of the notes I uploaded."
Tips for Effective Selections
- Upload key resources (textbook chapters, lecture slides) before your first session
- Create specific selections rather than one catch-all selection
- Update resources as you progress through your course
- Include practice problems and past exams for Phil to reference
- Add your own notes - Phil can help clarify things you found confusing
- Use clear, descriptive names that make selections easy to find
Viewing Session History
Every learning session is automatically saved and accessible from your selection:
- Click on a selection from your dashboard
- Click "View All Sessions" to see your complete history
- Click any session to view its details
